Jack Kirby co-created the Black Panther with Stan Lee, introducing the character in Fantastic Four #52. The Kirby and Lee Black Panther was far different from the Black Panther we've come to know over the years. He was a wily and tricky chieftain who invited the Fantastic Four to the enigmatic land of Wakanda so that he could use them to gauge his own abilities. Ultimately, however, he befriended Marvel's first family. Jack Kirby returned to the Black Panther in 1977 to write, draw and edit Black Panther, Vol. 1. Kirby's stories were action packed and dynamic, but controversial nonetheless. Kirby fans rejoiced at seeing "The King" back to his old form, but fans of Don McGregor's philosophical Panther from Jungle Action were dismayed at Kirby's complete about face on T'Challa's personality. Kirby took the Panther on a wild goose chase around the world with a group of greedy explorers who were bent on finding various artifacts. This journey took the Panther into numerous Kirbyesque landscapes and pitted him against all forms of mayhem. After a year of Black Panther, Kirby moved on to new pastures.
